Dyslexia Testing

At Mindspring Development Services, we conduct dyslexia testing most commonly as part of a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation.

This approach allows us to understand whether it is dyslexia or some other condition impacting reading and writing.

Why Choose A Neuropsychologist for Dyslexia Testing

Reading & Writing Concerns

It is unknown if learning difficulties are due to dyslexia or other learning challenges.

Need for a Diagnosis

Schools can identify specific reading learning disabilities, but oftentimes do not measure all the underlying cognitive skills to identify if the disability is dyslexia.

Family History

Dyslexia often runs in families, so early testing can help to uncover a child’s strength’s and weaknesses to ensure proper support is provided.

Current supports Are Not Working

There are different types of dyslexia, which each warrant specific types of interventions. Proper diagnosis and understanding of dyslexia helps schools provide the right accommodations specific to the child.

Our Approach to Dyslexia Testing

Our testing for dyslexia goes beyond basic reading tests to assess how cognitive, language, and memory functions interact with reading.

A thorough neuropsychological assessment can clarify how dyslexia affects your child’s learning and reveal specific strengths and challenges that inform the best methods for support and growth.

In order to diagnosis dyslexia, we look specifically at how a person processes sounds that relate to specific letters (phonological testing), how they remember and recall the form of spoken language (orthographic testing) in written form, as well as speed and fluency of reading.

Our Dyslexia Testing Process

Initial Consultation Call

This 15-minute call is designed to answer any questions and figure out whether neuropsychological testing is the right fit for your needs.

Intake Call

This is a one-hour call where we aim to understand all concerns and capture a complete history of the child.

Evaluation Sessions

Three appointments will take place, each of approximately two to three hours in length. The sessions take place in-person, during the day, at our office in Waldwick, New Jersey in Bergen County.

Report

After the last evaluation session, we deliver a comprehensive report that outlines all our testing and provides a series of recommendations for how to best support the youth’s unique strengths and weaknesses.

Follow-Up Meeting

For parent scheduled evaluations, a virtual parent conference is held approximately two to three weeks after the last testing session to provide additional context and answer any questions about the report. Schools contracting the evaluation have an option to have the report reviewed with the parents and school team.

FAQs

Dyslexia Testing Frequently Asked Questions

If your child shows persistent difficulties with reading, writing, or spelling that are not improving with typical instruction, testing may help clarify whether dyslexia or another learning issue is present.

Testing can be beneficial as early as kindergarten or first grade if reading challenges are significant and impacting. Early evaluation can identify signs of dyslexia and allow for timely support, but testing remains valuable at any age.

The diagnosis “dyslexia” is a clinical diagnosis. Schools typically do not diagnose dyslexia (with some exceptions based on the training of staff and district policies). Schools can identify specific learning disabilities in the areas of reading and writing, but oftentimes do not measure all the associated underlying cognitive skills in order to identify if the disability is dyslexia. In addition, there are different types of dyslexia, which warrant specific types of intervention. Having this information is very important in order to ensure that the person is receiving the appropriate type of instruction and accommodations.

After testing, you’ll receive a comprehensive report and our recommendations for support, which may include reading interventions, school accommodations, and further resources.
